Speaking to BBC Radio 5 live, Jordan Henderson said: "I felt we controlled the game before they got an equaliser from the set-piece at the end which was disappointing, but you have to expect that in the World Cup. We came back and dug in but it went to penalties and thankfully we came through.

"We have been practising them for a while now and the manager picked the five that he wanted. Unfortunately, I didn't score but the other lads were brilliant, especially Jordan (Pickford) for making the save and Eric (Dier) handing us the win.

"We showed a real togetherness tonight in a difficult game."

Six of the best

England captain Harry Kane, speaking to BBC Radio 5 live: "We are so unlucky not to go through in 90 minutes. No one laid on the floor and we stood there when it counted.

"It was a big night for England.

"In the shootout we had to stand up and that's what we have done.

"We are through to the next round and that is the most important thing."

England manager Gareth Southgate on ITV: "Fantastic. I think we deserved it as well. We played so well in the 90 minutes, We showed resilience to come back from huge disappointment and kept calm. It's huge credit to all our players and staff.

"Shootouts are tough. We had talked long and hard about owning the process of a shootout. They kept calm. The players have taken it all on board, it's a special moment for us.

"We looked at technique, how we needed to be as a team, the goalkeeper's role. A special moment but now I'm thinking about Sweden.

"This was special but I want us to go on. Sweden is another team we have a poor record against. We have underestimated them for years.

"We didn't rise to it which was brilliant, in general. A couple of times we lost our cool. It was an away game, to deal with it all was exceptional.

"They have created their own story and made history. I don't want to go home yet."

Confident England but room for improvement

Chris Waddle

They will be very confident for the next game. In certain parts of the pitch they weren't ruthless enough and they need to work on that final delivery. But up until the final third, they were very good again.

'I used my mental strength'

England into QF

BBC Radio 5 live

Speaking to BBC Radio 5 live, Jordan Pickford said: "I was in a massive whirlwind but I saved it with my left hand. I've been critcised for going with my top hand, but as long as you save it, that's all that counts. I might be young but I've got good mental strength and experience and I used that today.

"It's a great night to win a penalty shootout. Ideally we don't want to be going to a penalty shootout but we are delighted for the fans and the whole country.

"It gives us belief to go into the Sweden game and we will get straight back to business tomorrow."

'It was my mistake for their goal'

England full-back Kieran Trippier: "I thought we played really well in the first half and for their goal, it was a mistake by myself. I thought he was going to head it straight in, but I could not adjust when he headed it down, I was gutted.

"I keep going on about the spirit of the team, we carried on, we believed and in the shootout, we have some great takers. We practised and practised and it paid off.

"Pick a spot and in training I was always going to put it in the same place."

'Colombia were supposed to play football'

Chris Waddle

I hope Colombia get a massive fine for the cards and the way they surrounded the referee. It was a difficult game for the American referee and I think he was scared to make decisions. Colombia were supposed to be here to play football but I would've been gutted to see them go through.

I think England are in with a chance. I don't think England played particularly well. But this is knockout football so it does not matter how you win.

'I did my research'

England into QF

England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford, who saved Carlos Bacca's penalty: "I did all my research. I've got power and agility. I don't care if I'm not the biggest keeper because it's about being there in the moment and making the save and I was.

"It's all about the set position and I got a hand to it. We knew we had this game, even if it had to go to penalties, we knew we were capable of winning."

Eric Dier, who scored the winning penalty: "It was a nervous one. I've never really been in a situation like that before but felt I had to score after missing the header at the end so I'm just thankful I scored!

"Jordan (Pickford) is a fantastic goalkeeper and deserves everything. His attitude is brilliant and he's been brilliant in training and taken it into the game.

"To get knocked down like we did is difficult to come back from it. We knew what we had to do and we stayed calm. We never panicked. We were ready for that."
